"The Root of it All"
"For the love of money is a root to all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many grief’s" (New American Standard Bible, 1 Timothy 6:10). This verse from the bible is Paul speaking of the love of money. It's telling us that the love for money can cause you problems, and lead you to evil ways. This quote is saying that the love for money won't get you anywhere. This verse is important because in The Great Gatsby the characters obviously love money, and it leads to trouble. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book the love for money causes problems of adultery, lies, and death. The love of money between the characters is the root to almost every problem between them.
In Fitzgerald’s book the first illustration of the love for money causing evils is when adultery is committed. Daisy starts departing to Gatsby's house, and seeing him. While still being married to Tom Daisy confesses she is in love with Gatsby. "Your wife doesn’t love you," said Gatsby. "She's never loved you. She loves me" (Fitzgerald 130). This quote is spoken by Gatsby. It is saying that Daisy has been deceitful to Tom, and hasn’t been faithful. The quote is showing that Daisy married Tom for another reason. We come to conclude it was only because of his wealth. This quote is significant to the plot of the story because it shows how much Daisy desires money. It makes us question what Tom will do next. Even though this has happened Tom can’t do much about it. Tom is also blameworthy of the same thing. Tom has been having a secret affair with Myrtle. In conclusion, Tom and Daisy equally have something to deal with. It seems like what they are hooked on is all for the money.
Another illustration of the love of money causing evil is when the characters have to lie. "We're getting off," he insisted. "I want you to meet my girl." (Fitzgerald 24). This quote is said by Tom bound for Nick. The quote is stating that Tom is having a matter with another woman. This he is keeping away from Daisy. It's showing that Tom is just as guilty as Daisy. This quote is essential because it shows that now Nick is in the core of the trouble. Nick becomes another man lying to Daisy. This brings us to Nick having Daisy over for tea. He has her come just so Gatsby can see her. Nick is now being mendacious to Tom too. Since Tom and Myrtle are secret Myrtle is another liar. Mr. Wilson knows not a thing about her affair with Tom. Myrtle has kept it all from him. When overlooking the situations as a whole you may conclude that they are all in a mess of lying because of a love. What we wonder is if it is real or love for the money.
In Fitzgerald’s book death is what comes about because of the love for money being displayed. Tom despises Gatsby because he was trying to capture Daisy away from him. If that wasn’t enough Tom also doesn’t know Daisy really ran over Myrtle. Tom’s resentment over Myrtle's death, and his hate towards Gatsby brings about another dilemma. This causes Tom to tell Mr. Wilson that Gatsby killed Myrtle. This made Mr. Wilson find Gatsby, and have him killed. After Wilson killed Gatsby he shot himself. The quote prearranged from the book helps conclude Mr. Wilson killed himself. "It was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson's body a little way off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete" (Fitzgerald 162). This is saying that subsequent to this all the death is done, and revenge has been taken. Mr. Wilson killed himself so it’s all over. This quote is important because once again Tom and Daisy can continue on in their life.
Death, lies, and adultery show that the love for money causes problems in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book. The root of every problem in The Great Gatsby is the love for money. In closing, although money can make you happy throughout this life you could never guess what the love of it could cause.
